What is a scar?

The scar is a more or less deep damage of the dermis; it is the natural result of the tissue’s restoring process after a cutaneous trauma, a wound or a surgical operation. Whatever is the capacity of the skin to heal after a wound, the scar takes time to fade and flatten. Unfortunately, it remains visible, leaving a displeasing mark on the skin.

In certain cases, the scar evolves abnormally and can become a real handicap for the patient. We distinguish in particular two cases of frequently common complications:

Hypertrophic scar: presents important excrescences and takes longer than a normal scar to reach its full maturity. After two or three months, the scar attends its peak generating excessive erythema with abnormal pruritus and thickness.

Keloid scar is an even more important degeneration of the scar. The level of pruritus and erythema, at its peak, is as important as with an hypertrophic scar, but lasts longer. This kind of scar never resorbs without treatment.


At different levels, even a normal scar generates scraping and irritation leaving a red and disgraceful mark on the skin.

The medical silicone for treating scars

The advanced properties of medical silicone treat efficiently inflammatory, keloid and hypertrophic scars and improve visibly their aesthetic aspect.

The silicone film reacts actively by maintaining the hydration of the skin and decreasing the produced amount of collagen. This reorganization of the capillary activity enhances the aesthetic aspect of the scar and decreases the risk of hypertrophy. In result, the scar is softened and flattened with the treatment. The intrinsic properties of the silicone reduce also the itches, pruritus and the associated pain to the scars.

Scars are more sensitive to sunlight than the rest of skin

A scar is more sensitive to sunlight than the normal skin tissue. At different levels, exposing recent or old scars can have undesirable effects.

– A recent scar, not more than 6 months, with a pink or red aspect has more chances to be damaged by the sunlight. The immature scar is very sensitive to UV radiation. It sunburns more easily than the rest of the skin. The result is often a change in color, leaving the scar with an irreversible pigmentation tint.

– An old scar, more than 6 months, with a white aspect, is less sensitive than a recent one. But it still sunburns more easily than the rest of the skin.
